When he was 12, the family moved to Chicago, where his father became a professor of education at the University of Illinois-Chicago and his mother taught at Northwestern University Law School. His adopted brother, Chesa Boudin, was the son of David Gilbert and Kathy Boudin, former Weather Underground members who were imprisoned for their role in an armored car robbery that led to the killing of two police officers and a security guard.
