Raffaele Garofalo () was an Italian jurist expert in criminology.

Furthermore, he was the first author to use this term to refer to the science of studying criminals, crimes, and social controls relevant to crime or potential crime. His positions went against what was believed to be correct by the Classical School of criminology.
He went against the ideas of his teacher Cesare Lombroso, who had been considered the father of criminology at the time.
Garofalo differed from the prevailing belief in the midth century that the crimes had purely anthropological roots.
According to the authors theory, the crimes combined anthropology with psychology. His contributions gave criminologists a new vision of crime and he is considered one of the most important authors of this science to this day.
